The school caters
for children from 3 - 11 years old. All classes are mixed
ability. The Nursery, for 3 - 4 year olds has 120 places, two
classes of 30 morning and two classes of 30 afternoon and is
heavily oversubscribed.
Children enter full-time education in Reception classes mostly
when they are four. Our new Nursery, with increased intake now
allows for all our Nursery children to transfer to Reception
classes.
The school uses a variety of teaching methods individual, group
and class teaching as appropriate. Since 1994 Wilbury has had a
Nurture Group, which withdraws children for part of the week
from KS1. SEN support groups, offering structured support to
children, operate in KS2.
Teaching is planned collaboratively in year groups, using the
QCA Schemes of Work. Outside visits are very much encouraged as
part of the curriculum, both locally and further afield. We
organise an annual school journey , a two day camping trip, and
other enriching experiences. Clubs flourish at the school and
currently include a drop-in reading club, chess, football,
philosophy, netball, cricket, rugby, dance, ICT, African
drumming, art clubs, a choir, and many others.
We have three School Councils, where children are encouraged to
‘have a voice’ in the school. Children in KS2 may also apply to
become ‘Buddies’, and go through a selection process to act as
mentors to other children.
The school nurse visits the school regularly as does the
Educational Psychologist. The school has good links with many
support agencies. We have ‘The Place to Be’, a counselling
service for pupils based in the school for 3 days a week, and a
speech and language support project based in the Foundation
Stage.
