International Links and the Global Dimension at Wilbury
Across the school a topic based approach to teaching and learning has
been embraced, where children learn the skills they need to be an
effective learner, across all curriculum subjects.
Within the topics teachers plan for the opportunity for the
children to engage with the global dimension, which is split into eight
main areas:
·
Conflict Resolution
·
Sustainable Development
·
Interdependence of Nations
·
Human Rights
·
Social Justice
·
Diversity
·
Values and Perceptions
·
Global Citizenship
Through the Global Dimension children can explore connections with the
rest of the world. They can
engage with complex global issues and make links between their own lives
and people, places and issues throughout the world, and have a greater
understanding of their place within their local community, nationally
and globally. It also allows
teachers to draw on the cultural heritage of the children that they
teach and celebrate the diversity within the classroom.
Through our topics we aim to help children recognise their
responsibilities as citizens of the global community, equipping them
with the skills required to make informed decisions and take responsible
actions.
Children are encouraged to think about their own attitudes and values,
value diversity in their community and the wider world, and develop
skills that will enable them to combat issues such as injustice,
prejudice and discrimination.
International Links at Wilbury:
Wilbury has developed a number of links
with schools in countries spanning the globe.
We have a link with a school in Shunde, China which has allowed
the children to gain a first hand account of life in this country, and
also enhanced the study of China in Year 5.
A further link has been developed with a
school in Sao Paulo, Brazil to support the teaching and learning within
the Year 4 topic, centred on the country and its traditions and culture.
We are keen to support the learning of
French by developing a link with a school in France.
Other links with schools nationally and
internationally have been established.
